Day 3: It’s time to stop walking

When my mom and I first arrived in the City Centre of Nottingham, we could hardly believe our eyes.

Yes, that was partly to do with the absolute beauty of the city, but what really grabbed our attention was how odd the pigeons acted. Unlike in South Carolina where these birds flee at the slightest movement of a human some ten feet away, the pigeons in Nottingham will come grab crumbs at your feet without an inkling of fear.

I am almost always tempted to take a photo whether I am sitting at the bus stop or walking around the city because I just cannot wrap my head around how unafraid these birds are. I wouldn’t classify them as courageous creatures for daring to walk because I have seen many a time where their insistence upon walking has caused them to a) almost die, or b) die.

Although these pigeons have the ability to fly (they are actually birds,) to see them fly is a rare occurrence. Even when their lives have been put in mortal peril by on oncoming tram, they still merely flutter their wings enough to hop onto the nearest ledge. The crazy thing is, the birds don’t even flinch.

You would think these birds had forgotten they were created for more than just walking.

But don’t we do the same thing as Christians? Romans 8:37 says “But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.” Scripture tells us that we are more than champions and that we are victorious because of what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross!

If that’s the case, why do we blend in with the world around us? Why do we not allow the light of Jesus to shine in us no matter where we are and no matter what we are going through?

Romans 8 verses 38 and 39 go on to declare “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

No matter what this life throws us and no matter what deception the enemy whispers into our ears, we have the Holy Spirit residing in us! The same power that raised Jesus from the dead now lives in us.

It is time, Church, that we start living like we have been saved from an eternity in hell. It is time for us to lift our heads and bask in the grace and goodness of God.

Stop walking without purpose, and start flying with passion! Don’t let another day go by where you only live half a life. Christ has given us this allotted time and He has put us in this particular place to serve Him and to make His name known among the nations!
