God take us back, the place we began
The simple pursuit of nothing but You
The innocence of a heart in Your hands
God, take us back, oh God, take us back.
-Simple Pursuit, Passion Conferences
So much vies for our attention and focus. If you’re a working parent, you’ve got your child(ren), spouse, and job. If you’re a single student, you’ve got your studies, future, and friends.
No matter what season of life you find yourself in, there’ll always be people and things requiring your time and effort. But in the distractions and haze of business, I fear we begin to forget our First Love.
Ecclesiastes 7:29 reads, “Behold, I have found only this, that God made men upright, but they have sought out many devices.”
In other words, God made men to be upright, to seek Him in all things, but we have become so corrupted our own sinful pleasures and selfish pursuits that we’ve turned our back on His way.
We couldn’t be satisfied with having an intimate and obedient relationship with God in the Garden of Eden, so we sought after our own betterment (forgetting the God who created us) and brought sin into the world.
Now, we live in a fallen world where the lusts of the flesh attack us from every possible angle. And what I find to be heartbreaking is that even some Christians have replaced God with good, with the things of this world.
We were made and intentionally designed in His image, and yet our lives reflect the image of the prince of this world, the enemy.
Like the Israelites who built a golden calf when Moses was delayed on the mountain, when we feel as though God is far from us or silent in our time of need, we erect other objects of pursuit. We begin to pour ourselves into different things, to seek our worth and security in people and in things that can never fulfill the longing of our hearts.
I feel God telling you today to come back to a simple pursuit of Him, to stop looking to the right and to the left and just learn to walk with Him. He wants to guide and direct our lives, but we must be willing to walk with Him, to put our faith in Him. Stop withholding pieces of yourself from the Almighty God. Let Him restore and redeem every part of your being. You’re not too far gone for His grace and forgiveness. Repent, and turn away from the old self of sin, and put on the new self of sacrifice and love.
