People Bondage

Proverbs 29:25 warns us against people bondage. The verse says, “The fear of man brings a snare, but he who trusts in the Lord will be exalted.”

We may claim to be above caring about the opinions of others. We can say we are immune to their words, thoughts, and advice. We can chant methodically the “sticks and stones” anthem in our heads from morning until night, but if we aren’t living what we’re thinking, we are digging ourselves a deep pit.

Words have power. And when those words are spoken by people we esteem, admire, or love, we take what they say even more into account. Their opinions and preferences hold a higher value, a more prevalent weight in our hearts.

So, when God calls you to do something out of the ordinary, you hesitate. Mom thinks you should do this. Dad says you should do that. Your best friend tells you one thing. Your professor tells you another.

While I understand the great importance of wise counsel, I also want to warn you against ranking other peoples’ ideas above God’s declarations. If He has called you to start a business, it doesn’t care what your bank account or your feelings say. God will provide a way.

Now please don’t take these words as an excuse to do what you want and take risks God never asked of you. The Holy Spirit will never encourage you to sin or act in a way that is contrary to the Bible.

When you are in communion with God and have ears to listen, He will speak. He will direct you down the path you are meant to go. But I can almost guarantee you that the moment you begin to step into what God’s called you to do, you will come face-to-face with people who don’t believe in your mission.

That isn’t to say these people are bad people or that they are completely against you and everything you do. All humans have a perspective, a point of view from which they see and perceive the world. The way in which they see something in your life may contradict what God sees. We have got to stop worrying about “well, since so-and-so said I look like ________ than obviously I can’t be ___________.”

Whatever the scenario, we cannot continue to rank what others say above what God has told you. If you are seeking His face and reading the Word, you will have a peace about what He’s asking you to do. That doesn’t mean the path will be clear of obstacles or that everything will be perfect from now on. What it does mean is that you have a race to run and you need to stay in your lane.

People won’t always understand the mission God has given you, but instead of adopting their fears as your own, stand strong in humble boldness of what God has spoken to you.
